Student Union

Hi everyone,

Constitutional Council has created a formalized timeline, in which constituents who submit a grievance should expect decisions and formal opinions to be released within 6 weeks. Grievances are considered on a first come, first serve basis, except for rare circumstances deemed exigent by the Council, in which case a grievance may be handled more speedily. If a grievance is received within six weeks of the end of a semester, the grievance process may be slowed or put on hold until the following semester.

Applications for the Alternate Justice position in Constitutional Council are due September 23rd! To recap:

Constitutional Council is currently looking for 1-2 alternate justices. Constitutional Council, the main body of the Judicial Branch of Student Union,  reviews grievances about Constitutional questions submitted by students, mediates disputes between officers of Student Union, and generally ensures that Student Union officers follow the SU Constitution and Statutes.

Constitutional Council has taken onto its docket the following issue: is a seat on a Student Union committee considered an office of Student Union?

Constitutional Council has additionally taken onto its docket a grievance considering equipment as it pertains to the Constitution and Statutes.

Lastly, Constitutional Council chose not to take on a grievance concerning whether or not an officer of Student Union can serve simultaneously as a representative from a member committee of the Social Programming Board. Because Statutes I.6.b.2.ii  states clearly that "[r]epresentatives from the member committees of the Social Programming Board shall not be considered officers of the Student Union," the officer in question is not in violation of Const. III.3 ("No constituent may hold more than one Student Union office at the same time.") Constitutional Council does not find there to be a substantial question in the grievance.
